Jobim At 100

Panorama Brasil’s Jobim Orchestral Series

‘Arranged for orchestra by Panorama Brasil’s musical director Alastair Kerr and Matt Boden, the huge range of pieces selected had the effect of transforming the enormous concert hall into an intimate jazz club. Kerr made full use of Orchestra Victoria’s depth and range to extract the broadest reserves of emotion and sensuality from the strings and flute, as supported by Matt Boden on piano…The sashaying, lively energy pouring from the stage carried the most wonderful quality of glamour and vibrance, as though the sound itself were radiating the ruby sunlight of a Brazilian beach bar. In particular Kerr on drums and Boden’s pulsing, propulsive piano combined to give the pieces a fantastic sense of vigour and character.’

The backbone of this show is Panorama Brasil, the amazing outfit put together by percussionist Alastair Kerr...a dream combo to deliver the sounds of Jobim.’

PANORAMA BRASIL’S JOBIM ORCHESTRAL SERIES

The music of legendary Brazilian composer Antônio Carlos Jobim, brought to the orchestral stage for the first time in Australia by Panorama Brasil.

Antônio Carlos Jobim was a giant of music in the 20th Century. He crafted timeless popular music, pioneered bossa nova with hits like "The Girl from Ipanema" and “Corcovado,” as well as composing lush orchestral pieces and scoring evocative film music. Jobim’s melodic innovation and harmonic sophistication continue to inspire musicians and composers across genres and across the world.

Panorama Brasil have a long association with the music of Jobim and have been recognised for their brilliant performances of his music over the past 13 years. This new orchestral show premiered at Hamer Hall for the 2024 Melbourne International Jazz Festival, where Panorama Brasil joined with Orchestra Victoria and conductor Jessica Gethin in a program that highlights Jobim’s brilliance in both popular and art music. Featuring full orchestral arrangements by Panorama Brasil members Matt Boden and Alastair Kerr (musical director), Jobim At 100 celebrates 100 years of this lauded Brazilian composer by some of Australia’s most accomplished exponents of the Brazilian music tradition.
